Chairman's Report June 2009
Dear Broadsands and Elbury Resident.
Let me first begin this 2009 Chairman’s Report by thanking the committee members for their help and support during my first year as Chairman. For giving up precious time to attend committee meetings, collecting subscriptions, printing and copying documents, gathering information, writing and preparing information, writing to ward Councillors and local government departments and in the main connecting with local people.
I would also like to recognise and thank all members for their sponsorship, conviction and belief in the need to maintain the activities of the association. BERA has been active for 51 years, quite an achievement, certainly worthy of acknowledgment and my hope is that with your support it will be able to continue for many years to come. As I look forward to another year with much optimism, my aim will be to continue to monitor local activities and developments, share ideas on how to bring about improvements, raise awareness about local issues and provide support on behalf of residents with the Council.
I found an article on the BBC concerning community interests which I judge quite pertinent. According to research commissioned by the BBC, community life in Britain has weakened substantially over the past 30 years. Analysis of census data reveals that neighbourhoods in every part of the UK have become more socially fragmented. The researchers suggest that neighbourhoods are now more likely to be less trusting and more fearful, and these trends may be linked to higher likelihoods of fearfulness because we are less likely to see and therefore understand each others' lives. It is my hope that your Residents’ Association through voluntary community efforts, will help to impede the causes of social fragmentation. As part of this expectation the committee decided for the first time to include Broadsands Avenue within the boundary of membership. Much interest has been expressed by these residents and we hope to see many of them at the AGM and signing up for membership. I also hope that we can all work together and acknowledge a common even stronger desire and capacity to protect this part of the bay.
